The University of Minnesota Crookston, also known as simply UMC or U of M, Crookston, is a four-year university located in Crookston, which is the county seat of Polk County, situated in the US state of Minnesota, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 8000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. Crookston is the episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Crookston, and it is part of the ''Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area'' or ''Greater Grand Forks''.
UMC was established in 1905, as Northwest School of Agriculture (NWSA), and it adopted its current name in 1966. Currently, the university has an enrollment of approximately 1300 students and offers 29 undergraduate degree programs and 40 concentrations through four academic departments: Math, Science and Technology, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business and Education.
UMC's athletic teams are known as the Crookston Golden Eagles, who compete in NCAA Division II athletics in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), in various sport for both men and women. Their mascot is known as ''Regal'', and their distinctive colors are maroon and gold.
For the quality education offered, U of M, Crookston has been numerously highly ranked by significant publications, over the years, such as the Princeton Review, which has named UMC in top 161 ''Best Midwestern Colleges'' for 2008, 2009, and 2010, or US News & World Report, which has placed it among the ''Best Colleges'', in the ''Midwest YES Public Colleges'' category, for twelve consecutive years, from 1998 - 2010.
